Home: Candles

Scents have such a powerful effect on our memory. In order to get to the olfactory cortices, the neurons must travel through the hippocampus, the brain structure predominantly responsible for memory, thus triggering the memories that are so closely associated with particular scents.
Candles are therefore the ultimate alternative to perfumes and sprays in getting your olfactory kicks in. They are perfect in setting the ambience or mood in a room. There is nothing like having a luxurious smell like almond vanilla or apple cinnamon waft through the corners of a room, brightening dark winter nights and creating the coziest of atmospheres. If you don't have access to a wood-burning fireplace, a candle is the next best thing!

If you follow me on Instagram (@heysarahlee), you know that I've been on a mahoooosive candle purchasing spree recently, hitting up Diptyque and Jo Malone. If you combine my love for candles with my love of special editions AND minis... well, there was just no way I would have gotten out of there without a purchase.

Diptyque is enjoying their 50th anniversary of existence, and have released a set of five miniature scented candles for $75. I know this is pricey but when you consider a singular standard diptyque candle costs $60, then you would consider this a steal.

The scents are: Thé (tea), Jasmin (jasmine), Baies (berries), Figuier (fig tree), Ambre (amber). All are 35g and just the cutest little things you've ever seen. I love that I would never have purchased some of the muskier scents but the boy appreciates how they masculinize the house. Hah!

Jo Malone has released a Travel Candle Collection in their expected gorgeous gold and black wrapping, absolutely perfect as a Christmas gift for your in-laws or favorite co-worker.

At $100, it's not the cheapest of gifts, but Jo Malone has a reputation for luxury scents, so it's pretty much a given that whoever the recipient is, they will appreciate and love this. The scents are:
English Pear & Freesia (my favorite!), Sweet Almond & Macaroon, and Pine & Eucalyptus. All are 60g and absolutely luxurious.

I literally have a candle or two burning all day. My house smells glorious!

Where do you get your favorite candles? Perhaps I should try buying some, ahem, less extravagant ones next time?
